Speaker Impedance Calculator
Speaker impedance is the measure of electrical resistance a speaker
presents to an amplifier, expressed in ohms (Ω).
Matching the right impedance is important for sound quality and to avoid
damaging your equipment. This calculator helps you work out the total
impedance when wiring multiple speakers in series, parallel, or a
combination of both. Simply select the impedance of each speaker and the
wiring method, and the tool will give you the total load your amplifier
will see.

Parallel Wiring
Parallel Wiring Explained
Parallel wiring is the most common and easiest wiring method.
You connect all positive leads (+) together and all negative
leads (-) together.
This can be done by plugging
each speaker into the matching terminals on the amplifier or
by linking the speakers directly.
With parallel wiring, you don’t need to run a return cable to
the amplifier. Once the last speaker is connected, the wiring
can end there.
Series Wiring
Series Wiring Explained
When wiring in series, connect the negative (-) terminal of
the first speaker to the positive (+) terminal of the next
speaker. Repeat this for any additional speakers in the chain.
On the final speaker, run the remaining negative (-) cable
back to the amplifier.
This leaves you with a positive (+) cable from the first
speaker and a negative (-) cable from the last speaker
connected to the amplifier.

Series-Parallel Wiring Explained
When wiring in series-parallel, you combine both methods to keep the total impedance at a manageable level for the amplifier.
First, group your speakers into pairs.
Within each pair, wire the speakers in series by connecting the negative (-) terminal of the first speaker to the positive (+) terminal of the second speaker.
Once each pair is wired in series, connect the pairs together in parallel. Do this by joining all the remaining positive (+) terminals together, and all the remaining negative (-) terminals together.
Finally, run a single positive (+) cable from the combined positives and a single negative (-) cable from the combined negatives back to the amplifier.
