Project Overview
Bitterne Park School in Southampton needed to replace their outdated Tannoy system, which was no longer fit for purpose. The old speakers were only located in corridors, making it difficult for staff and pupils to hear announcements clearly in classrooms, particularly during lessons.
The school worked with Audio Volt to design a modern solution that would provide full coverage across all four floors, including the classrooms, large assembly hall, and atrium spaces. The new system needed to deliver crystal-clear announcements, be simple to use, and be cost-effective to install and maintain.
The Sound System Explained
Fonestar PROX-120S & PROX-240S Mixer Amplifiers
A total of four mixer amplifiers were installed (one per floor), with the larger floors using the higher-powered 240W versions. These amplifiers were chosen for their reliability, ease of installation, and straightforward operation, ensuring staff could make announcements with minimal training.

Fonestar GAT-601-EN 6" 100V Ceiling Speakers
126 of these EN54-certified ceiling speakers were installed across classrooms and communal areas. They were selected for their excellent sound reproduction, allowing pupils and staff to clearly hear announcements, and for their fire-rated safety design.
The integrated fire dome and steel grille ensure the speakers maintain integrity and operation during alarm or emergency situations, making them ideal for a busy school environment.

Two of these powerful loudspeakers were installed in the large school atrium, providing excellent sound projection and ensuring announcements could be heard clearly even in the most open and noisy areas of the school.

1,700 metres of high-quality, low-smoke halogen-free speaker cable was used throughout the installation, ensuring safe and reliable connections between amplifiers and speakers.

Project Outcome
The completed system has transformed communication throughout Bitterne Park School. Every classroom is now fitted with clear, fire-rated ceiling speakers, ensuring staff and students can hear announcements at all times, even during lessons. The atrium and assembly hall benefit from high-powered loudspeakers that comfortably fill these larger spaces.
